The Department

In Hamburg, we provide the full spectrum of acute renal replacement therapies from neonatal to geriatic age with more than 5000 treatments per year. As one of Germany's largest pediatric nephrology centers, the Department of Pediatric Nephrology at UKE looks after a population of over 4 million in the north of Germany and more than 4000 outpatient contacts and 300 hospitalizations per year. Our multidisciplinary team offers full medical and psychosocial services for children of all ages, including a prenatal consultation clinic. Our group has a special clinical focus on pediatric chronic and end-stage renal disease, treating more than 300 children in the pre-dialysis stage, on dialysis and after kidney transplantation in our state of the art facilities. Thanks to its high reputation, our center already receives a large number of international patients for diagnostic assessment and state of the art therapies.

The clinical service is complemented by a broad spectrum of research activities. This includes genetic and experimental research in dedicated laboratories as well as the coordination of national and international clinical research consortia. The Hamburg group leads patient registries and participates in numerous investigator and industry sponsored clinical trials.
