The pediatric nephrology unit was set up in 2009. It is now a regional reference centre for the treatment of kidney disease in children.
The unit provides a comprehensive diagnostics and treatment service for children with renal disorders and has specialist expertise in the investigation and management of infants, young children and adolescents with acute kidney disease, severe chronic kidney disease (dialysis and transplantation), nephrotic syndrome, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, hypertension, vasculitis, tubular disorders, CAKUT.
The pediatric nephrology unit collaborates closely with other units, especially the pediatric urology, rheumatology, radiology, pathology units and the adult nephrology unit in order to be able to manage our patients as effectively as possible and offer services including renal biopsy and histopathological diagnoses, manual peritoneal dialysis in small children, automated peritoneal dialysis, preparation for kidney transplant and post-transplant follow up, pre-natal counseling for congenital malformations of the kidney and urinary tract, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring. The unit is also involved in numerous national and international clinical trials, also as a coordinating centre.
Clinical activity is also accompanied by teaching activities for the degree course in Medicine and Surgery and the Schools of Specialization in both Pediatrics and Nephrology.
